Special Considerations

During the course of a student’s degree programme, they might be faced with exceptional personal, medical or family problems and/or difficult and distressing events that are outside their control and that negatively affect their ability to take assessments and their academic performance. Such problems are known as ‘extenuating circumstances’.

Extenuating circumstances are situations or events that meet all of the following criteria:

  • Exceptional - different to what a student has to deal with in their usual day-to-day life.
  • Outside of a student’s control – there was nothing that the student could do to stop it happening.
  • Negative impact – it must have had a demonstrably significant, negative impact on the student’s ability to study or to undertake an assessment.
  • The timing of the circumstances must be relevant to the claimed impact; these are usually short-term in nature.

The extenuating circumstances regulation and associated procedures provides mechanisms by which students may bring extenuating circumstances to the attention of the University and allow for the consideration of the impact of those extenuating circumstances on their academic performance and the provision of measures to address the impact, where possible and appropriate.

Academic misconduct

1 Plagiarism is representing work or ideas of a third party as one’s own. Plagiarism is not limited to text-based sources; it also applies to the use of graphical material, images, video/audio, calculations, etc.
2 False Authorship is where a student is not the sole author of the work they have submitted as their own work. False Authorship can be direct or through a platform or software (such as Course Hero or similar), an essay mill or a tutoring service.
3 Collusion is cooperation in order to gain an unpermitted advantage. This may occur where students have collaborated on a piece of work and passed it off as their own individual efforts, or where one student has authorised another to use their work.
4 Misconduct in examinations and in-person assessments, for example: copies from the examination script of another candidate; obtains or offers improper assistance; allows themselves to be impersonated or impersonates another candidate; has with them any unauthorised materials or electronic devices.
5 Fabrication or misrepresentation is the presentation or misrepresentation of fabricated data, results, references, evidence, or other material.
6 Poor academic scholarship is conduct which breaches the standard of academic integrity expected by the University and which does not neatly fit into the definitions outlined above.

Academic penalty

1 i) A written warning. (Where relevant, the lower standard of the piece of work will be reflected in the mark awarded but no further penalty will be imposed).
2 ii) A mark of zero for the specific material which is the subject of the academic misconduct or where the material does not constitute a specific paragraph or section.
3 iii) An overall percentage reduction to the piece of work reflecting the percentage of the work, which is the subject of academic misconduct, as determined by the Academic Misconduct Officer.
4 iv) A mark of zero for the entire piece of coursework or assessment in which the academic misconduct has occurred. In the case of misconduct in an examination a mark of zero will be recorded for the examination in question.
5 v) To be applied in relation to ‘failure to disclose previous experience or qualifications that are a bar to enrolment on a module’ only, a mark of zero for the module with the requirement for the student to take a different module as a reassessment (where a reassessment opportunity is permitted).
6 vi) If the misconduct does not relate to work undertaken in a taught module or as part of a taught programme of study, the case should be referred to the Academic Misconduct Committee.
7 vii) Where an academic penalty is not appropriate, the Academic Misconduct Officer may request that the Chair of the Academic Appeals and Misconduct Committee uses summary jurisdiction to apply a fine up to a maximum of £250.
